Road Trip!

So, next week we are going on a road trip to North Carolina's Outer Banks.
We'll be staying with 7 other families (everyone except us and one other family has only one small child) in this great big house which is only a couple of blocks from the ocean. We'll spend a week there, over Thanksgiving. We're very excited!
The one thing I'm really nervous about: 11 hours in the car with 2 kids (split up over 2 days).
I have 2 questions for all our blogger friends:
1) Any good ideas for car entertainment for kids? We do have the portable DVD player and books on tape and odds and ends of toys, but just wondering if anyone has any tried-and-true methods of keeping kids happy in the car. Especially a 2-year-old!
2) Has anyone been to any of the Smithsonians in Washington DC? We'll be spending the night there and want to check one of them out. Just wondering which one would be the coolest for us and the kids!
Thanks in advanced for your suggestions!

Our DVD player saved us on our drive across the country. We also did small bags with fun things every hour or so - mini magna-doodles, finger puppets, and small rattles for playing along with the music were the favorites. We live just outside of DC and our favorite Smithsonians with the kids are Natural History and Air and Space. There is a carousel in the middle of the mall too, if that is something your kids like.

Before leaving on a trip I would go to the $1 store and get a few "new" toys and a coloring book or sticker book. That usually worked for awhile because it was new and exciting!
Good luck! Sounds fun!!

Gorgeous accomodations!! You are the expert on road trips more than I, but I loved your window markers idea. Sammy also loved a MRS. Potato Head with lots of fun accessories when she was two and we drove to Powell...She also loved those magnetic paper dolls--they have boy styles out there! Bandaids are always a hit for that age at our house...Good luck!

How fun! That house looks gorgeous. What a fun trip! Sydney says, "put a bag together for James and Jackson. Put a new movie for them, a few snacks that they like, coloring things, and let them pick out a few treats." When we go to UT that's usually what we do- like the backseat "pocket" idea from our good ol' van trips growing up! As for a 2 year old though, that's a little tougher. Our kids LOVE taking their doodle magnet boards and drawing pics of what they see on the drive OR playing the guessing game- taking turns drawing and guessing what the other one is drawing... they can draw on those for forever... but new movies is usually what our kiddos love so hopefully your portable DVD player has a car charger. You could put envelopes and papers and stamps in a ziploc for them to write letters to all their favorite cousins. ;-) Stickers also are a good time occupier in our drives... You'll do great and probably already had all these ideas! ;-)

Sydney says, Window markers would be SO much fun on the drive too! (Not a bad idea- lots of things you could do with them!)

HEY!!! I photographed a wedding last night and I could have sworn you were related to one of the cousins!!! It was incredible the resemblance between you and him!! Anyways... hope all is well! I love the costumes and good luck on your road trip (sorry, still new at the kid thing... don't have any advice for you). -Texie

Becky! You guys will have so much FUN! The Outer Banks is so great! Your house looks like it is in the same neighborhood we stayed in for the MCW trip...Four Seasons in Duck. We had our huge group and it never felt crowded, of course the kids spent 24/7 in the pool :) Have a great time!
